60/min
shared rate limit their OTP queue now respects automatically
₦7
flat, predictable cost per OTP sent

The challenge

Kolo Finance's lending app needed OTPs and disbursement alerts sent the moment an event happened in their backend, at bursts well above a steady rate — sign-up waves could fire dozens of OTPs in the same minute — and their previous provider's undocumented rate limit meant some of those bursts silently failed with no warning.

How they used Luma

Read the live OpenAPI reference at /docs and sent a first OTP within 30 minutes of getting an API key
Queued sends client-side to stay under the documented 60-requests-per-minute limit during sign-up bursts, instead of guessing at a ceiling and hitting 429s in production
Built a lightweight poller against GET /v1/status rather than expecting a per-message webhook, since Luma's webhooks are account-level events, not delivery confirmations

The result

Kolo Finance now sends OTPs and disbursement alerts entirely through the API, at a flat and predictable ₦7 per message their finance team can forecast exactly, with a client-side queue that absorbs sign-up bursts instead of hitting the rate limit.
